In California, firefighters used drone support to rescue multiple adults and dogs stranded on sandstone bluffs.

Here's what to know

In a social media post cited by Patch, the San Francisco Fire Department said crews were dispatched on Oct. 17 shortly before 6 p.m. to the cliff area north of Fort Funston's hang glider deck, about 200 feet above the shore.

The response included coastal rescue units and a drone. In a bluff rescue, the technology can help crews assess where people and animals are before sending rescuers onto unstable or difficult-to-reach terrain.

The department said one adult who had tried to help with a dog rescue before firefighters arrived also needed assistance getting off the cliff.

All were brought down safely and without injury, the San Francisco Fire Department said.

More background

Fort Funston sits within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is a popular public destination.

The area is especially popular with dog owners because the animals can run off leash. The site draws recreationists and pets and features dramatic bluffside terrain.

The location once served coastal defense purposes and later operated as a Nike anti-aircraft missile location during the Cold War, according to Patch.

Where can I learn more?

Fort Funston isn't the only place where a routine outing has turned into a cliffside rescue:

• On California's coast, the U.S. Coast Guard hoisted a stranded teen from a 200-foot cliff above the beach.

• In Bend, Oregon, firefighters pulled a missing dog from a narrow cliff ledge after a leash snapped.

• In the U.K., rescuers used a drone to find a dog after she survived a 120-foot cliff fall.
