A farmer stumbled upon an 8-foot python that had been stuck for nearly five days in a fishing net intended to protect crops.
Here's what to know
A farmer heading to his field discovered the entangled python and alerted other villagers. The News Mill reported that the rescue took place in Aniapal village, in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.
The Baripada forest department responded to the villagers' call for help by sending animal rescuer Krishna Gochhayat.
Freeing the python meant cutting the netting without injuring it — delicate work that Gochhayat began only after examining the reptile.
The python had become caught in a barrier meant to keep wildlife away from crops. According to The News Mill, farmers in the area had surrounded their fields with fishing nets for that purpose.
The rescue also offers a different perspective on human-wildlife encounters. In this case, villagers helped secure assistance for an animal trapped in a human-made barrier.
What's being done?
The python was found to be in good condition during the post-rescue care, which included a health check and a light massage. According to The News Mill, Gochhayat had freed it by carefully cutting the netting with a knife to avoid causing injury.
With no harm to the python or anyone involved in freeing it, the rescue ended in relief for villagers and forest department staff.
Careful placement of protective nets can help prevent a repeat. Officials urged caution when positioning those nets on farmland near forests.
The python returned to the wild in Similipal forest, where the team released it after checking its health.
