A puppy's frantic barking outside a Kuala Lumpur apartment could have been easy to ignore. Instead, one resident followed the sound and helped lead a careful rescue that lasted more than an hour, earning admiration far beyond his neighborhood.
He discovered a dog trapped in a drain, with its head wedged between concrete slabs after heavy rain apparently swept it into the channel and left it struggling to escape.
Here's what to know
Video showed the puppy being freed from the drain, according to Asianet Newsable.
Reports said the resident went outside after hearing intense barking and discovered the dog pinned in the drain, its head lodged between concrete slabs.
Instead of attempting the rescue alone, he reached out to friends and municipal officials. They spent more than an hour slowly breaking apart the concrete so they would not hurt the puppy further.
With the concrete cleared, the dog was able to come out of the drain.
Why does it matter?
The resident did not handle the situation entirely on his own. He recognized that an animal was in distress and kept seeking help until the right people arrived.
Urban drainage systems can become especially dangerous during periods of heavy rain. Fast-moving water, slick surfaces, and narrow concrete openings can trap animals trying to find a way out. In this case, the puppy appears to have been carried into the drain by rainwater and then gotten stuck while trying to climb toward an opening.
The resident, his friends, and municipal officials each played a role in the rescue.
What's being done?
After the resident called for help, municipal officials joined in, and the group worked deliberately to free the dog.
Community-minded action can also extend beyond emergencies. You can take local action to help make a difference, too.
Fortunately, because one person responded to the animal's distress and gathered help, a vulnerable puppy was rescued.
