The Missouri State Fair canceled its Sea Lions Splash show after a tractor-trailer carrying the animals crashed on Interstate 70.

Several people were injured, and the three sea lions being transported were quickly taken for veterinary evaluation.

Here's what to know

According to FOX 2 St. Louis, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the one-vehicle wreck happened on August 13 around 3 a.m. on Interstate 70 near Boone County's 133-mile marker, where the tractor-trailer hit a concrete barrier.

According to fair officials, no deaths were reported, and the number of people injured or what injuries they suffered hasn't been confirmed.

Responders removed the animals from the damaged trailer and took them for evaluation.

The Sea Lions Splash act had been due for a 10-day run at the fair through Sunday, Aug. 23. No replacement act has been announced.

More background

Transporting animals, trainers, and equipment from one venue to another carries logistical risk, and when something goes wrong on the road, responders must deal with both human injuries and animal safety at the same time.

Safe handling and transportation are essential for moving animals between locations, helping reduce the risk of injury or stress during the trip.

Even when animals appear stable after incidents, prompt medical evaluation can help identify stress or injuries that are not immediately obvious.

Meanwhile, the crash remains under the purview of law enforcement and emergency responders.

After the veterinary check, the Missouri State Fair said that the three sea lions were in "excellent health."
