After his dog ended up in the water in Duluth, a man descended a ladder on the canal breakwall to reach his pet. But once he reached his dog, he wasn't able to get back out either – leaving both in need of rescue.

Both were later recovered safely from the canal near Canal Park's Aerial Lift Bridge.

Here's what to know

Shortly before noon on October 2, witnesses in Duluth told Northern News Now they saw a large black dog enter the canal below the city's Aerial Lift Bridge.

The dog's owner climbed down using a ladder on the breakwall to get to the dog.

He reached the animal, but the dog's size kept him from climbing back out on his own.

A Coast Guard rescue boat took the man and the dog to safety from the canal, and the Duluth Fire Department said it had also been dispatched to assist.

More background

The canal beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge is an active stretch of water connected to Lake Superior.

Even an emergency involving a single pet and its owner can require a boat response rather than a rescue from shore.

What's being done?

The Coast Guard carried out the water rescue, and the Duluth Fire Department said it was dispatched to assist.

After the rescue just before noon on October 2, Northern News Now reported that it was still trying to determine the condition of the man and the dog.
