Fire crews saved at least 30 cats from a major blaze at an Illinois animal shelter that has cared for stray and homeless cats for more than 35 years.

Here's what to know

Crews responded to a structure fire at Lombard's Cat Guardians shelter on East St. Charles Road, according to Shaw Local's My Suburban Life.

Emergency crews were already responding when the village of Lombard posted a social media alert just before 10 p.m.

A subsequent village update said the fire had been brought under control.

The organization offers cats for adoption. Its website describes a rescue program that provides care and, when needed, permanent placement.

In addition to caring for animals at its East St. Charles Road location, the shelter supports foster care and helps place cats in homes.

What's being done?

Traffic control around the shelter was among the duties Lombard police helped carry out.

To keep the scene clear for emergency crews, the village asked people to stay away from the area.

"Fire officials believe most of the cats have been accounted for, although the total number has not yet been confirmed," the village said.
