Near Malibu, a van went into the water off Pacific Coast Highway, and everyone inside, a driver and two dogs, survived.

One dog got out with the driver, but rescuers still had to go down to the rocky shoreline to remove a second dog from the vehicle.

Here's what to know

Near Deer Creek Road, the vehicle left Pacific Coast Highway and ended up on the rocky shore below. According to KABC, the van came to rest in the water, leading to a response from firefighters and lifeguards.

By the time crews reached the van, the driver had already escaped with one of the two dogs. Firefighters then safely freed the other dog, which was still trapped inside.

After crews pulled the dog out, they carried it back up to the roadway. Photos from the scene showed firefighters and lifeguards surrounding the van in the water.

The Ventura County Fire Department said neither dog appeared to be hurt. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

What caused the crash remains unknown.

The rescue highlights the work that firefighters and other first responders do, and the unique situations they have to prepare to handle quickly and effectively.
