A dog was found alive in Baguio City, Philippines, after spending nearly a day under landslide debris, offering an unexpected bright spot in a disaster that killed eight people.

Cebu Daily News said the animal belonged to one of the landslide victims, and city officials described its recovery from the rubble after almost 24 hours as "miraculous."

Here's what to know

As of 7 p.m. on Aug. 10, the Baguio City Public Information Office said two people had been rescued, but three were still missing. Search, rescue, and retrieval operations were still underway at ground zero as crews worked to locate those who had not yet been accounted for.

Unfortunately, the dog belonged to one of the landslide victims.

Why does it matter?

Landslides can strike with devastating speed, leaving little time for people or animals to escape. In densely packed communities or hillside areas, debris can bury homes, roads, and access points, making rescue efforts especially difficult and time-sensitive.

What's being done?

At the disaster site in Baguio City, emergency crews remained engaged in search, rescue, and retrieval operations to locate the missing and recover those affected by the landslide.

In the aftermath of a landslide, recovery often extends well beyond the initial rescue window, with officials balancing urgent search efforts against safety concerns for workers and local residents.

The Baguio City Public Information Office said the dog's rescue brought "a small but meaningful moment of hope in the midst of heartbreak."
