A cobra abruptly disrupted a school in Jalpaiguri, India, as it made its way into a classroom and ended up in a corner, MillenniumPost reported.

Here's what to know

Once the cobra was noticed during class at Boragari-I BFP School in Dhupguri block, staff closed off the room and kept watch from outside. Teachers took students to another room while the snake remained inside.

According to MillenniumPost, classes halted for over two hours while the reptile moved between the school's third and fourth classrooms.

The school sought assistance from a Dhupguri environmental group and the Snake Lovers Organisation. Environmentalist Bhajan Saha arrived after being alerted. Environmentalists at the scene identified the animal as a venomous cobra measuring about four and a half feet long and removed the snake.

More background

The original report did not specify what drew the snake onto campus, but such encounters can be linked in part to human activity. As BBC Future stated, development and daily life overlapping more with wildlife habitat can create more human-wildlife interactions.

What's being done?

After rescuers caught the snake, they transported it to a safe area and released it into the forest.

Teachers were able to safely resume classes afterward.
