California's Bouquet Fire surged past 1,000 acres, then crews gained ground as evacuations remain

The Bouquet Fire tore through rugged terrain near Santa Clarita, racing past 1,000 acres within hours and forcing evacuations in parts of Los Angeles County.

Firefighters increased containment to 48% on Sunday, though that has remained the figure as of Monday afternoon. Evacuation orders, smoke concerns, and road closures remain in place around the Angeles National Forest, which the organization (@Angeles_NF) posted about on X.

Here's what to know

The Bouquet Fire was first reported shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday near Bouquet Canyon Road and Quarry Road in the Angeles National Forest. Within a couple of hours, it had expanded to 710 acres, ABC7 reported, citing the U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire. By 6:55 p.m., the fire had already grown to at least 1,000 acres. By Sunday morning, the blaze was measured at 1,048 acres.

Crews fought the fire from the ground and in the air. Aerial footage from Saturday showed flames pushing through steep mountain terrain, while video from Sunday showed calmer conditions even as water drops continued on flare-ups.

Three zones remain under evacuation orders: LAC-E018, LAC-E030-B, and LAC-E031-A. Evacuation warnings remain in effect for nine nearby zones: LAC-E016, LAC-E017, LAC-E019, LAC-E020, LAC-E021, LAC-E029, LAC-E030-A, LAC-E031-B, and LAC-E030-C.

Footage from the area showed a large plume of smoke above the mountains, and smoke remained on Sunday as crews worked on hot spots. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory for the Santa Clarita area.

Containment rose from 40% to 48% as firefighters kept the blaze at 1,048 acres after its rapid growth on Saturday. Air support also remained active despite calmer-looking conditions, with water drops continuing over the burn area.

Officials set up an evacuation shelter at the Castaic Sports Complex Community Room on Castaic Road, and small pets are welcome there.

California Highway Patrol - Newhall said Bouquet Canyon Road is closed at Vasquez Canyon Road, while evacuation orders and warnings remain active across multiple Los Angeles County zones.
