A family in Tennessee had an unexpected wildlife encounter outside their log cabin when they saw a bear cub climbing over the roof of their parked SUV.
They soon realized the moment was far more serious than it first appeared after the cub's mother was spotted inside the vehicle.
What happened?
A video shared to TikTok by Sarah Michelle shows an adorable bear cub on top of the SUV, moving along the roof rails and across the vehicle as though it were perfectly comfortable there.

As the family assessed what was happening, they saw that the adult bear had somehow gotten into the SUV. Because the cub remained outside and the mother was trapped inside, they chose not to approach the pair but instead stayed inside a different vehicle while figuring out their next step.
From that safer position, they avoided opening the SUV themselves and used the remote key fob to pop the trunk. That gave the mother bear a way out, and she quickly climbed out through the rear of the vehicle before heading back into the woods with her cub.
Why does it matter?
Wildlife can seem harmless one moment and become risky the next, particularly when a young animal and its parent are involved. A cub scrambling around on top of a car might appear amusing, but a mother bear with nearby offspring may react unpredictably if she feels cornered or believes her baby is being threatened.

As BBC Future has reported, many animal conflicts are shaped by people expanding into wildlife habitat or unintentionally creating conditions that bring wild animals into closer contact with humans.
By keeping their distance, the family likely reduced the chance of harm for both themselves and the animals. Walking up to a trapped mother bear or trying to open the SUV manually could have led to a much more dangerous outcome.
