Dubai Police added another headline-grabbing vehicle to its patrol fleet: the Yangwang U8, a Chinese electric SUV with 1,197 horsepower that can float through floodwaters and spin 360 degrees in place.
Here's what to know
According to Supercar Blondie, the Yangwang U8 debuted at WETEX 2026 at Dubai World Trade Centre through a collaboration between the Dubai Police Force and Al-Futtaim Automotive Group, the UAE distributor for Yangwang.
Standout features include emergency flotation for flood conditions and the ability to rotate a full 360 degrees while staying in place.
It produces 1,197 horsepower and can reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, performance figures more often associated with supercars.
The EV joins a police fleet already known for unusual choices, including a Ferrari FF, Mercedes SLS, Mansory-tuned Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and ultra-rare Ferrari Purosangue.
More background
Beyond regular patrol work, Dubai Police plans to use the Yangwang U8 as a public-facing vehicle that helps officers connect with residents, giving it an outreach role alongside its emergency function.
During floods, the U8's ability to stay afloat and keep moving could make it more useful than a typical luxury patrol vehicle.
Cars like this encourage buyers to make their next car an EV, and everyday drivers can benefit from lower fuel costs and reduced routine maintenance compared with gas-powered models.
What's being done?
Dubai Police's partnership with Al-Futtaim Automotive Group reflects how public fleets are testing EVs for specialized roles, not just for basic transportation.
EVs can be adapted to very different needs, from public outreach to emergency response. The U8's ability to rotate in place and travel through water gives Dubai Police flexibility a standard patrol car can't offer.
For drivers considering the switch, charging an EV at home typically costs half as much as using public chargers, though basic Level 1 charging can be slow. Qmerit provides free, instant installation estimates for faster Level 2 home charger installations.
