Utah desert county weighs turning sewage into drinking water as growth strains supply

Washington County stands out as both one of Utah's driest places and one of its fastest-growing, and officials there are considering a plan to convert highly treated wastewater into drinking water.

The idea fits within a broader county effort to cope with scarce supplies as persistent drought and a swelling population put the water system under increasing pressure.

Drought resilience often depends on redundancy. A large treatment plant can process water. A reservoir can store supply for dry periods. Reuse technology can reduce waste. This keeps water circulating within the system and avoids losing it after a single use.

That kind of planning can cushion the effects of long dry stretches and rising demand. It may also buy time for broader conservation efforts and smarter development choices that reduce pressure on finite resources.
