A United Kingdom homeowner with a Tesla Wall Connector, Powerwall 3, and a Model 3 built their own custom monitoring dashboard and automation system to avoid paying for the popular Netzero subscription app.
Their self-built system can detect when their car starts charging and then coordinate the Powerwall to charge during their energy company's off-peak windows, saving money and time.
Here's what to know
The creator shared the dashboard design on Reddit and explained that it prevents the battery from sending stored power to the car during off-peak charging. According to the post, the dashboard watches for when the EV starts charging, then prevents the Powerwall from discharging into the vehicle, so the battery charges during that cheap-rate window.

The poster said they also reduced the Powerwall's reserve setting from 20% to 5%. They explained that, because their setup does not include a gateway, it cannot run in island mode or provide off-grid power during an outage, so holding back that extra reserve was not useful for them.
If you're exploring backup options, it may be worth comparing home battery choices and installer quotes through EnergySage. The company has teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions.
Another option is Pila, which offers battery backup products with plug-and-play batteries priced at a fraction of what a whole-home backup system would cost.
More background
For many households, battery storage can be one of the best ways to protect a home during outages, save money by storing cheaper electricity for later use, and potentially support off-grid operation when configured for it.
When a battery dumps energy into an EV charger during the cheapest rate period, some of the expected financial upside can disappear, leaving the owner paying for equipment and a subscription while losing part of the benefit.
