After Tesla notified one customer that their Powerwall 2 would be swapped for a Powerwall 3 at no cost, the customer wondered whether the same visit could also add another battery more cheaply.
Other owners said combining the work might trim some labor charges, but they shouldn't expect a second unit for free.
Here's what to know
The question came up in Reddit's r/TeslaSolar community. There, the original poster wrote, "I got the notice in the app saying they're draining my battery down and will be replacing my battery to a PW3 for free."
OP went on to explain that, "I've always wanted to have two batteries. So I was thinking of adding another PW3 to the order. My question is, will they charge me for installation if I order a second battery?"
One commenter straightforwardly explained that, "They'll charge you less, but it won't be free. Typical expansion is $700-1000 for labor, but they won't have to dispatch a crew since they're already on-site."
They added that some costs would still apply because "mounting, wiring, commissioning, testing, and any revised documentation must be done," even if the installer should not bill twice for "dispatch, travel, basic site setup, shutdown/lockout, and much of the closeout work."
Several others were less optimistic that it would be possible at all. One said, "I am guessing with Tesla it will be impossible… But give it a try."
Another user wrote, "I spoke with Tesla this morning who confirmed I cannot add an expansion to the replacement since that would be handled by Sales and the two don't mix/cannot be combined." That reported response from Tesla suggests the hoped-for savings may not materialize if the replacement and a new expansion really can't be combined.
Still, for many homeowners, battery backups represent freedom from blackouts, energy savings, and more independence from the grid.
Where can I learn more?
A warranty swap from a Powerwall 2 to a Powerwall 3 naturally leads to bigger questions about what the newer battery can do and whether adding more storage makes sense. The articles here add context on Powerwall 3 features, rollout milestones, and installation growth.
• Tesla confirmed several game-changing details about Powerwall 3, including a more flexible home backup setup.
• Tesla's new home battery hit a major milestone with first launches in the UK and Germany.
• Tesla Powerwall adoption kept climbing as it surpassed half a million installations worldwide.
Seen alongside the Reddit discussion, these updates show why a simple replacement offer can turn into a bigger conversation about upgrades, permitting, and payback. They also underscore how Powerwall owners are weighing new hardware against the long-term value of adding storage.
