Home solar owner adds V2X charger for Tesla Model 3, says it now fully charges in 2 hours

"Not cheap, but it's good for a family that has two EVs."

One homeowner with solar panels described upgrading their existing setup after adding a Tesla Model 3.

After upgrading their home batteries and pairing them with a 25-kilowatt bidirectional charger, the homeowner said that they could recharge their EV in just two hours. They took to Reddit's r/SolarDIY forum to share images and their story.

Here's what to know

The original poster said rising energy needs led them to add a BAT 9.0 module along with a 25kW NACS-compatible V2X bidirectional fast charger.

With that expansion, their storage capacity went from 18.1 kWh to 27 kWh, giving the household a bigger energy reserve and a much faster way to charge the EV than a typical setup.

The OP said they had been using a Sigen system for about six months before adding an EV to the household and increasing capacity with the BAT module.

The change shows how a home energy system can expand alongside new needs. In this case, the larger battery bank and charger cut charging time and built on the setup.

"Nice upgrade," one commenter wrote, while another added: "Wow, this is so cool. Did you really DIY this? What was your total install cost?"

The OP responded, writing: "To be honest, we just purchased the equipment and hired a local electrician team to set up the system. Equipment is around $15k, the installation service is around $10k. Not cheap, but it's good for a family that has two EVs."
