Tesla has updated its popular Model 3 with a larger center screen, a light gray interior choice, and vehicle-to-load capability, but with a significant catch: at least initially, the updated features will be available only in China.

Here's what to know

Posting on Weibo, the Chinese social media app, Tesla announced the China-spec Model 3 will now come with a 16-inch center display instead of the previous 15.4-inch unit, Carscoops reported.

In addition to the larger size, Tesla says the upgraded screen also delivers a sharper image and a smoother refresh rate. These features could particularly appeal to Tesla owners who use their vehicle screens to stream movies or play video games.

Tesla has not announced plans to provide the same upgrades in North American or European markets, Carscoops said.

In addition to the improved screen, the new China-market Model 3 will also be offered with a light gray premium interior in addition to the standard black cabin. Both versions use a black headliner.

Tesla is also bringing vehicle-to-load, or V2L, capabilities to its EVs. The company said on Weibo that every Model 3 and Model Y variant in China can supply up to 2.2 kilowatts of AC output, though most vehicles require a separately sold external adapter to do so.

According to Tesla, that 2.2-kW output is enough to run a kettle, a portable rice cooker, and another cooking appliance at the same time.

More background

Though new to the Model 3, the 16-inch screen is already available on Tesla's Model Y in China, the U.S., and Europe, per Carscoops.

Tesla previously has released upgraded features in the Chinese market before expanding to other countries. The company used that roll-out strategy for the Model Y "Juniper" facelift and the long-wheelbase Model Y L.

For shoppers comparing ownership costs, charging an EV at home is significantly cheaper than relying on public chargers. And Qmerit is helping homeowners install Level 2 chargers with free, instant installation estimates, which can mean much faster home charging than a regular wall outlet.
