A fatal crash in southern New Jersey is drawing renewed attention to Tesla's driver-assistance technology after federal records indicated the system was active shortly before impact.
The case involves an 82-year-old Buena Vista Township man, Stephen Field, who died after a Tesla Model 3 entered an intersection past a stop sign, based on Electrek's review of crash data filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

State police said troopers were sent on July 6, 2025, to County Route 671 and Chestnut Avenue after a Tesla Model 3 hit a Honda Civic that was in the middle of a left turn, the outlet noted. Field was driving the Civic and later died of his injuries, while the Tesla driver and three passengers were hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Electrek reported that a separate submission from Tesla to federal regulators listed a Level 2 driver-assistance feature as "Verified Engaged" within 30 seconds of the crash. Initial local reporting did not include that detail.
Tesla's filing identified the vehicle as a 2019 Model 3 and recorded a death, but omitted several potentially important specifics, including the crash description, the software build, and whether the road was within the system's approved operating area.

Electrek said it connected the federal report to the Buena Vista Township crash by matching details including the location, model, fatality, month, and time. The outlet said an NHTSA Standing General Order requires automakers to report crashes when a Level 2 assistance system had been active shortly before impact.
Because Tesla redacted the software entry, it could not determine whether standard Autopilot or the company's "Full Self-Driving" package was in use.
Still, the publication said the stop-sign aspect appeared more in line with "Full Self-Driving" than Autopilot, and added that the filing listed Tesla's speed before impact at 4 mph, leaving more uncertainty about the final moments before the crash.
What's being done?
NHTSA is already looking into Tesla's crash-reporting practices. The outlet also reported asking New Jersey State Police whether investigators received Tesla's underlying telemetry or only Tesla's own characterization of it.
Commenters on Electrek suggested high-profile incidents are affecting their thinking.
"The more I read these, the more I'm not sure if I want to put my daughter or family in a Tesla," a commenter wrote.
"The dead man didn't sign up to be a beta victim," another said. "And it doesn't matter if overall FSD leads to fewer accidents when strictly avoidable ones occur."
