RV owner seeks $1,500 backup power station, gets hard lessons on battery life

Buying emergency power for an RV often becomes a decision that pits budget and capacity against each other, with safety and dependable performance adding more pressure on the cost. 

Here's what to know

In a Reddit thread posted to the r/RVLiving community, the shopper asked for the highest-capacity unit they could trust near that price point. 

This original poster wrote that they were "Looking to avoid the PROBLEM units and brands but need the most Amp Hours we can find in a reliable unit in the $1500 range (or thereabouts). Must be safe inside the RV and serve as backup if Pedestal power (WHEN) it goes out!"

Replies centered on well-known portable power brands, with Bluetti, Jackery, Anker, and EcoFlow all entering the discussion. One commenter summed up their advice this way: "Go with one of the big brands, bluetti, jackery or Anker. I personally am happy with my Anker."

The thread also raised a caution about battery aging. The original poster said an older Bluetti that had sat unused for years would not keep a charge when they finally tried it, and another commenter replied, "Lithium degrades whether you use it or not, and more so if it sits never used at zero % charge."

Users also offered examples from their own setups. One said a Jackery 1000 kept multiple fans running for more than 24 hours after a hurricane, while another reported that an Anker Solix C2000 could handle short bursts from major appliances and last about two days under lighter use.

What can be done?

One useful starting point is to size your system around actual power needs rather than the brand alone. That means looking closely at watt-hour capacity and output for the appliances, cooking gear, and air conditioning that need to run.

It may also help to decide whether an all-in-one power station is the right tool in the first place. Some commenters said a separate battery-and-inverter setup offers better value, while others preferred the simpler, indoor-safe convenience of a packaged backup unit.
