Rescue dogs at a Virginia shelter have reportedly stopped using their usual walking trails after construction at a neighboring data center brought noise and vibrations to the property.
For Hanover Humane Society, the disruption is affecting animals that are already trying to recover from neglect, abandonment, and abuse.
Here's what to know
According to an Instagram post, Hanover Humane Society said construction tied to a nearby data center has left some rescue dogs "too frightened to use their usual walking trails."
That means activity next door has disrupted a basic part of the shelter's daily routine, and the problem may not stop with the project. The post said developer Oppidan is proposing two additional warehouses nearby, raising concerns that heavy truck traffic could make conditions around the shelter even more difficult for the dogs.
That concern has spread beyond the shelter. Dozens of residents have rallied behind Hanover Humane Society and are calling for stronger protections for the animals before more development moves forward.
Public frustration was also visible in the comments on the post. One commenter wrote, "No more destructive data centers!!"
What's being done?
The main response has come from the developer. According to the post, Oppidan has offered fencing and noise reduction measures to lessen the impact of its nearby work on Hanover Humane Society.
Oppidan has also agreed to further discussions, suggesting the proposal remains contested rather than settled.
That is particularly notable because the shelter's concerns are not limited to what has already been built. Leaders are also warning about the effects of future truck traffic tied to the two additional warehouses.
Residents are adding public pressure. Dozens have rallied behind the shelter, suggesting the response is moving beyond private discussions between a nonprofit and a developer.
Shelter leaders, however, do not believe the offered fixes go far enough. As described in the post, they argue that more must be done to protect the rescue dogs before the area takes on even more warehouse activity.
