In Texas, a Powerwall owner says 'free nights' could beat Tesla's $800 credit

The picture changed if overnight battery charging could be used intentionally, though.

A Dallas-Fort Worth homeowner was seeking to make their battery storage far more valuable, and they may have found a solution: a "free overnight" plan.

But their outcome depended on whether the batteries could take on grid power overnight and carry the home through the pricier daytime period.

Here's what to know

After running a year's worth of historical meter data, the homeowner said in Reddit's r/solar that they could save $717 annually on electricity costs by switching to a free overnight plan from another provider. But they wondered, "Am I crazy to walk away from $800/yr in Tesla credits?"

On Tesla's fixed plan for their 17-kilowatt solar system with two Powerwall batteries, they would pay around $940 per year, whereas a free overnight plan would come out closer to $1,155 annually if the batteries were not actively used to shift load.

The picture changes if the homeowner can intentionally use overnight battery charging.

The homeowner noted that "63% of my import already falls between 9pm and 6am," so charging the batteries from the grid overnight could cut billed daytime imports from 4,412 kilowatt-hours to about 620, reducing the annual total to around $224.

Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save money on energy, and gain more energy independence.

Homeowners who want to compare battery options and competitive installation estimates can explore EnergySage, which has teamed up with electrification brand Qmerit to help homeowners get the best price on home battery storage solutions.

More background

Even though Tesla's annual credit came with restrictions that limited how homeowners could use the batteries, including backup reserve, operating mode, and grid charging, the homeowner said it felt like "a lot to give up." The free overnight plan offered a different trade-off: no solar buyback, a plan that especially benefits households moving their usage into free hours.

The poster also said they still needed to confirm whether a non-buyback plan would even let a home with a 17-kilowatt distributed generation system enroll, and they flagged possible battery wear from deep daily cycling of 6-year-old units.

One commenter asked, "Did you account for inefficiencies?" and added that "the round trip efficiency is around 90%, so for every 10 kWh you out into the battery you get 9 kWh back out."

Battery storage can provide both backup protection and bill savings, but the thread highlights that control settings matter just as much as hardware. For households that don't need a whole-home system, Pila offers another strong backup option, and its plug-and-play batteries cost a fraction of a whole-home backup system.

Questions like these could matter for anyone seeking to maximize their solar savings.

"I'd double-check whether the math accounts for round-trip battery losses, extra cycling, and any sneaky fees in the new plan. Also worth confirming they'll accept your existing setup before switching, " another commenter offered.

Where can I learn more?

A battery backup system can save homeowners hundreds of dollars or more annually.

• In Texas, sending power back to the grid could turn Powerwalls into peak-demand earners.

• One homeowner's Tesla Powerwall earned $600 by supporting a virtual power plant.

• California homeowners could make up to $1,500 yearly by renting out Tesla Powerwalls.

• Tesla's Solar Roof and Powerwall can earn homeowners $350 each month in grid revenue.
