US nuclear plant worker says rotating 12-hour shifts can bring in as much as $210,000

Most people will never step inside a commercial nuclear power plant, much less hear what a shift there actually looks like. A TikTok post is changing that, offering a rare glimpse into a tightly controlled workplace where an equipment operator says rotating 12-hour shifts can lead to six-figure pay.

In a TikTok video posted by No Cap Finance (@NoCap.Finance), an equipment operator at a commercial nuclear plant described a job focused on operating plant machinery to produce electricity. Twelve-hour shifts rotate between days and nights, and part of the routine involves doing "plant rounds" while working with "pumps, valves, motors, breakers, anything you could think about in an industrial industry."

To get hired, applicants need either "a four-year STEM degree or some nuclear Navy experience" and must pass the POSS and the BMSC entry exams. After that comes a year-long training period split between classroom work and hands-on instruction, with weekly tests throughout.

Pay was described as about $150,000 to $210,000 a year for fully qualified equipment operators, while reactor operators working in the control room make more.

One commenter summed up the appeal simply, stating, "Love hearing what different engineers do."

For a field that is both promising and heavily scrutinized, the operator put the standard plainly: "In the nuclear industry, our standards are super high. So you do need an 80 on each exam."
