Scam emails targeting Norwegian Cruise Line passengers are drawing attention because they contain legitimate reservation information, such as guests' names, ships, departure dates, and booking numbers.
Reports began appearing on Oct. 10, and quickly led passengers to ask how fraudsters obtained details linked to booked cruises.
Here's what to know
The company said it was investigating phishing messages that masqueraded as Norwegian Cruise Line correspondence and urged guests to complete "security verification," verify the card on file, or wrap up check-in — steps that could expose personal or financial data.
As Cruise Hive reported, one of the messages shared on Reddit read: "To safeguard your booking and provide a smooth check-in, Norwegian Cruise Line requires a single security authentication for the card on file for your Norwegian Getaway reservation. This is a security measure, not a request for payment."
Reddit posts from passengers said the bogus notes referenced actual trip information — including the traveler's name, ship, sail date, and booking number — which made them resemble normal pre-cruise outreach.
A number of the reported messages added urgency by warning that the reservation might be canceled unless the guest responded quickly. That kind of deadline pressure is typical of phishing, and it hits harder when tied to a real cruise someone has already planned.
More background
In one Reddit account from a Norwegian Encore guest, the fraudulent email reportedly displayed the entire booking record, including the fare paid, pointing to access to unusually detailed reservation data.
A different Reddit poster sailing on Norwegian Getaway said at least six suspicious emails arrived with correct booking and personal details. Because the messages were repeated and highly specific, they seemed aimed at that reservation rather than like generic spam.
On Reddit, some passengers have wondered whether a breach exposed booking information. Norwegian Cruise Line has not said how the scammers came by the accurate reservation details.
What's being done?
Norwegian Cruise Line said it knows about the fraudulent emails and is investigating. It has also published a warning on its website for guests.
The warning also went out in a letter to travel advisors, pushing the alert beyond Reddit threads and social media.
"We are aware of reports of fraudulent emails falsely claiming to be from Norwegian Cruise Line being sent to guests and are actively investigating the matter," it read.
Many cruise passengers rely on advisors to manage bookings, payments, and trip documents. The company said it will also share the notice with guests scheduled to sail.
Don't treat emails demanding card verification or threatening cancellation as routine just because they include a real ship name or booking number. In this case, those specific details made the scam more believable.
