A baby alligator gar turning up in a Mississippi floodplain may sound like a small discovery, but conservationists see it as a major sign of progress.
What happened?
At a former farm called Loch Leven, the gar's presence suggests a long-separated stretch of the Mississippi River is once again working the way healthy floodplains are meant to.
During a survey of the site, a team found a baby alligator gar, as NOLA.com reported. The species depends on flooded vegetation for spawning.
The young gar was more than a foot long, even though it was only around two months old. The outlet also reported that adults can live for 100 years and grow to more than seven feet.
Loch Leven is a 6,000-acre Mississippi property enclosed by a levee built before the Civil War, and part of it has been reconnected to the Mississippi River, using floodgates. Young fish are already appearing there.
The Nature Conservancy led the restoration and used a simple box culvert with a valve that can be opened and closed to reconnect the river with the floodplain.
Will Prevost of the Nature Conservancy explained, "It allows the water on the interior of the property to rise and fall with the flood pulse of the Mississippi River."
Why does it matter?
The presence of baby alligator gar suggests the restored area is again providing a habitat that a floodplain is supposed to offer.
Solomon David, a professor of aquatic ecology, said, "If we find baby gars on the floodplain, it's a good indication that the floodplain is serving its use as far as supporting aquatic wildlife."
That kind of restoration can do more than help fish. Reconnected floodplains can absorb and hold enormous amounts of water during high-river events, easing pressure on nearby communities and infrastructure.
When the floodgate at Loch Leven is opened, the property can hold 72,000 acre-feet of water, about enough to fill 25 Superdomes, according to NOLA.com. That allows the site to function as a small spillway and could lower flood risk downstream in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
The project supports biodiversity while also helping communities prepare for worsening flood threats in a changing climate.
What's being done?
The project restores the river's connection to its floodplain instead of cutting it off entirely.
A controllable structure manages that exchange, letting water move in and out in a way that better follows the river's natural cycles.
The approach could also inform similar work elsewhere along the Mississippi and beyond. Reconnecting floodplains can expand habitat for fish and other species while also giving high water more space to spread before it reaches homes and neighborhoods.
David put the project's impact into perspective: "It would be great to see projects connecting the floodplain to the river throughout the Mississippi River, and even on other rivers."
