After a groundhog in Jarrettsville, Maryland, tested positive for rabies, health officials issued a warning for anyone who may have had contact with the animal.
Here's what to know
According to the Maryland Department of Health, officials found the animal near the 3800 block of Old Federal Hill Road in Jarrettsville. Because people or animals nearby may have been exposed, anyone who thinks they or their pets came into contact with a groundhog there is being asked to contact the Harford County Health Department for follow-up, WMAR-2 News reported.
Authorities emphasized that the mere sight of a groundhog does not, on its own, warrant alarm.
What can be done?
Residents are also being told to keep cats, dogs, and ferrets up to date on rabies vaccinations through a veterinarian or a local rabies vaccination clinic, while making sure pets are leashed on walks and closely watched in the yard.
The department advised people to "cover trash cans and do not leave pet food outside."
Residents are further being told not to feed wildlife, attempt to pet it, or otherwise engage with it. If a stray animal seems to be acting abnormally, including showing excessive affection, aggression, lethargy, or disorientation, officials said residents should notify Harford County Animal Control.
