A wildfire burning near the Mendocino-Lake County border has developed into a major emergency, with evacuations, road closures, and limits on access to public lands as crews contend with dry, windy weather.

According to CBS News, firefighters were concentrating on improving containment lines while a red flag warning remained in effect for Lake County and other parts of Northern California because of gusty winds and low humidity.
Cal Fire said the Lucas Fire had grown to 4,008 acres and was 15% contained. It began near Potter Valley, and evacuation orders were still in place for several zones in Lake County and one zone in Mendocino County, with additional nearby areas under evacuation warnings.
The Lake County Fairgrounds' Baldwin Pavilion in Lakeport was opened as a temporary evacuation point and animal shelter. Officials also closed Highway 20 at Bachelor Valley Road, Witter Springs Road, and Saratoga Springs Road.

The fire led to an emergency closure in part of the Upper Lake Ranger District within Mendocino National Forest, leaving some forest roads, trails, and campgrounds off-limits while the threat remains active.
Officials also declared a local emergency to help support response and coordination efforts as crews continue trying to contain the blaze.

"Area closure impacts include all National Forest system roads, trails, and campgrounds beginning at the forest boundary where it intersects Forest Road 16N30 along Sam Alley Ridge," forest officials said.
