Jackery's $619 portable battery can grow to 11 kWh, offering renters backup

That matters especially for renters and apartment residents, who often are not allowed to make permanent electrical upgrades.

Jackery has launched a portable battery that starts at $619 and can scale all the way to 11 kilowatt-hours, giving renters and apartment dwellers a backup option that is far more flexible than a fixed, wall-mounted system, according to CleanTechnica.

Here's what to know

The HomePower 1000 Plus v2 raises continuous output to 1,800 watts and surge output to 3,600 watts through four 120-volt AC outlets, versus 1,500 watts and three outlets on the earlier version.

It comes with about 1 kilowatt-hour of built-in storage and can handle as many as five 2 kilowatt-hour expansion packs, for a maximum of 11 kilowatt-hours.

Jackery says the battery uses lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, cells rated for 6,000 cycles and is backed by a five-year warranty.

The company also notes it uses cell-to-pack construction, a design more often associated with automotive batteries, which can help reduce size and weight while improving durability.

Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save money on energy, and gain more energy independence.

More background

Rather than acting as a full whole-home battery for most households, the HomePower 1000 Plus v2 is better suited to supporting important loads.

CleanTechnica reported that its 1,800-watt output is enough to run many essential devices on a standard 120-volt, 15-amp line.

In practice, that lets it back up select appliances where they are used or add extra runtime to larger battery systems and generators. Moreover, it can store electricity for use during pricier time-of-use periods or save solar power for later.

That matters especially for renters and apartment residents, who often are not allowed to make permanent electrical upgrades.

A modular battery that works with portable solar panels, switches back to grid power after the stored charge is depleted, and can move with you to a new home offers a practical way to get into energy storage.

What can be done?

While the HomePower 1000 Plus v2 carries a $749 MSRP, Jackery's introductory promotion drops the starting price to $619.

Adding a 200-watt portable solar panel raises the cost by another $200.

Instead of replacing the setup entirely, buyers who want more capacity can add to it over time. Pairing the main battery with one 2-kilowatt-hour expansion battery brings the package to $1,499 MSRP, or $1,269 at the sale price, and the platform can keep growing from there.

For homeowners comparing a portable setup with installed storage, looking at multiple options can help clarify what fits a budget and a living situation.

And for shoppers who want a smaller-format alternative, Pila offers strong battery backup options: Pila's plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of what a whole-home backup system would cost.

CleanTechnica reported that Jackery also built in safety features aimed at real-world use, including a battery management system that can automatically shut power off if voltage or current becomes unstable.

It also has a fire-resistant outer casing.
