Google's AI Overview butchers response by inserting words randomly, baffling users

A new complaint about Google's AI Overview began after the system produced a mangled response to a simple question about the Sahara Desert, turning what should have been a basic description into something that looked plainly broken.

For users already skeptical of AI-generated search results on the r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, the bizarre response was another reminder that convenience can quickly give way to confusion.

Here's what to know

The discussion started in a Reddit thread where a user posted a screenshot showing Google's AI Overview describing the Sahara as: "The Sahara is the world's largest hot britannica."

The answer then added: "It touches ten countries kids plus Western kids."

In the replies, one commenter asked: "It touches 10 what?"

Elsewhere in the thread, another commenter argued the wording may not have been random.

"It's not actually random, it's because it sourced the data from Encyclopedia Britannica Kids," they wrote. "And for some reason it loves naming the source randomly. You'll see a lot of mentions of Wikipedia and even Reddit."

More background

Machine-generated summaries at the top of search results are meant to give users quick answers. But when those summaries distort even simple information, they can have the opposite effect, forcing people to stop, question what they are reading, and track down the original source themselves.

Tools like these are increasingly shaping how people gather information. If a search result can scramble a straightforward answer about the Sahara, it raises broader concerns about what could happen when people rely on AI for health, financial, weather, or emergency information.

AI products are often introduced as major breakthroughs, yet users are left to deal with the fallout when the tools fail in obvious ways. Companies keep expanding AI systems while still struggling with basic tasks.

In another shaky screenshot, one commenter wrote: "AI is a flat circle."

What can be done?

The issue points to problems with testing and sourcing guardrails. If an AI tool is pulling terms like "Britannica" or "kids" directly into the body of an answer, that suggests a failure to separate source labels from the information itself.

Commenters advised thread visitors to avoid these sorts of tools to prevent baffling results.

"Stop using Google AI overview, swear in your searches or use -ai whatever just don't use the AI overview," one said.

A different user praised the difference after switching to DuckDuckGo and turning off its AI mode.

"I swear search is so much better," they wrote.

Where can I learn more?

This Sahara mix-up is part of a longer run of odd and misleading AI Overviews in Google Search.

• After an investigation, Google removed some AI summaries that delivered false health information to users.

• Google users grew furious as Search replaced dictionary definitions with bizarre AI-generated summaries.

• Frustrated web users warned that the internet is dead after disturbing Google answers spread.

• Students said Google Search fails with AI so badly they turned back to Wikipedia.
