'Looks intentional': EV driver frustrated after finding charging station knocked over

A damaged public electric vehicle charger sparked frustration on Reddit after one driver arrived to find a station unusable, underscoring how quickly access problems can unravel.

In this case, the charging unit had been knocked onto its side, leaving the driver unable to plug in and leading some commenters online to argue that the scene did not look accidental.

Here's what to know

In Reddit's r/mildlyinfuriating community, the original poster shared a photo of the charger on the ground and wrote: "Know electricity isn't free, but with gas prices being what they currently are, this sure as hell is inconvenient."

The OP also said that "the other three charging stations next to this one were blocked off after the fact," which made the disruption even worse.

The conversation quickly turned to how the site ended up in that condition and whether better protection might have prevented it.

One commenter wrote: "Looks intentional."

Another user added: "The only way that was an accident was if a bulldozer didn't see it. Those yellow bollards, if properly installed, would typically total a car or truck that hit one hard enough to knock it over."

More background

Many EV drivers have voiced the same frustration for years: A charger is only useful if it is working, accessible, and maintained.

The replies in the Reddit thread included similar stories about chargers that were installed but not kept in service.

Recalling a former retail job, one commenter said the company "publicly claimed to be an eco friendly company" but did not repair the chargers in its parking lot. The same user added: "They had charging stations in their parking lot but when one would break they wouldn't fix it. So they ended up being for show."

Another commenter added that charging stations at a local Safeway "broke or got damaged and they just never replaced them."

One of the biggest consumer benefits of driving electric is the chance to spend less on fueling. Even when electricity is not free, charging often costs much less per mile than filling up with gasoline, and for some households, that can translate into real savings. But when public chargers are out of service, those savings can become less reliable.

Reliable charging also helps more drivers feel comfortable switching to EVs, which can cut tailpipe pollution while lowering household transportation costs.

The most practical step for EV drivers is to build in backup options whenever possible, whether that means identifying multiple nearby charging stations, checking charger status in an app before heading out, or prioritizing locations with more than one connector.

Where can I learn more?

Drivers have dealt with similar breakdowns and suspected vandalism well beyond this one damaged charger.

• In Santa Clarita, drivers found destructive vandalism at a charging station and demanded answers.

• At a Tesla Supercharger in New Zealand, vandals targeted charging equipment and baffled drivers.

• Away from home, one EV owner spotted vandalism at a public charger during a trip.
