After Elon Musk said in July that his artificial intelligence tool Grok Imagine would produce a full-length AI version of The Odyssey, the company behind the tool has released seven minutes of the project.
An episode on X, with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker credited on the post, shows the project is underway, though the rollout is much smaller so far than the scope Musk described.
Here's what to know
As Variety reported, Grok Imagine on Friday posted the opening seven-minute installment of an AI-generated Odyssey series. It marks the first public release directly tied to Musk's pledge that the tool would deliver a feature-length version of Homer's ancient Greek poem.

Musk had said the movie would be finished by the end of 2026. "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer," he wrote.
In the post sharing the episode, the project was described as a "creative collaboration" with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. Both Wonder Studios and Walker specialize in AI filmmaking, per Variety.
More background
The July announcement drew criticism from established filmmakers. Scott Derrickson, director of Doctor Strange and The Black Phone, blasted the idea in a since-deleted post on X after Musk floated the project.
"Clearly @elonmusk doesn't know shit about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s," he said at the time. "His opinions on art are worthless."
The AI Odyssey project arrived alongside Musk's criticism of Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey.
Musk took issue with Nolan's casting of Elliot Page in the role of Sinon and Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, arguing those choices were meant to meet the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' representation and inclusion standards. In March, Musk said on X that "Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist" and that Nolan cast Nyong'o because "He wants the awards."
What's being done?
The seven-minute release offered a look at what Grok Imagine and its collaborators are producing, and it means Musk's July announcement has been fulfilled in part.
It remains unclear whether the creative team with Grok Imagine can expand this start into a full feature.
Critics, filmmakers, and audiences are now left to evaluate what has been shared.
