A home solar DIYer tracked a systemwide drop in output to one bad panel, then tried to figure out whether the module could be repaired or had reached the end of the line.
Once the panel was removed from the string, the setup started producing power again.
Here's what to know
On Reddit, the poster described a panel that had taken down an entire string, writing, "One of the panels on one of the strings was showing 0v making the whole string 0v."

After taking that panel out, the user reported, "I removed it am now generating 1.5kw, AIO is feeding the battery ~28A, AIO PV input is showing ~140v."
When panels are wired together in a string, a single failed component can drag down far more than its own 250-watt output. Losing a full string cuts into daily solar generation and the stored power available for later use.
The discussion also turned to the way the array was configured in parallel. The poster was running one string with seven panels alongside another with six.
One commenter cautioned, "All parallel strings should have the same voltage. For one, the MPPT cant work porperly. And second an more important, the higher voltage string can push current through the lower voltage string"
Going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy, especially when the system is designed and sized correctly from the start. If you're considering rooftop panels, EnergySage can help you get free solar installation estimates and compare quotes.
More background
The poster asked, "If the PV leads are showing 0v on this 250 w panel is it garbage you think? Anyway to salvage it?"
Replies suggested the answer depends on the specific point of failure.
"Check the diode 1st," one user wrote.
Another advised, "Depends on where the failure is. Cables and other bits can be fixed. Take it to the bench and start tracing."

A dead panel does not always mean the entire module is beyond saving. A faulty cable, connector, or diode may still be repairable. Troubleshoot carefully, especially when strings carry high DC voltage.
According to the commenter who raised the string-mismatch issue, the system may still work while leaving performance on the table.
"So yes, you are generating power, but probably a bit less power then you could generate," they wrote.
The same commenter added that uneven strings "may accelerate ageing" and can worsen existing hotspots.
What can be done?
If you're building or upgrading a home solar system, getting professional quotes can help you avoid costly design mistakes while maximizing long-term savings.
With EnergySage's help, the average person can save up to $10,000 on solar purchases and installations. Tools such as EnergySage's solar map show the average cost of a home solar panel system on a state-by-state level, along with solar incentives in each state. Together, those resources can help homeowners get the best price for rooftop solar panels and access available incentives.
Adding battery storage to a solar setup is also one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save on energy costs, and go off-grid. Home batteries can store extra daytime production so you're not wasting power when the sun is shining and can keep essential appliances running when the grid goes down. You can explore EnergySage for information about battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates.
