CATL says robot repair hubs will fix any EV battery in 72 hours across 100 cities

The battery is typically the most expensive major part of an EV.

A damaged electric vehicle battery can turn a minor crash into a costly nightmare when the only option is replacing the entire pack. CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, says it wants to change that through robot-powered repair centers designed to get electric cars back on the road much faster — and at a much lower cost.

Here's what to know

EV expert The Electric Viking (@electricviking) reported that CATL said its robotic repair sites are being built to achieve a turnaround of less than 72 hours for battery problems, and that some work handled by mobile service trucks could be finished in 48 hours.

As The Electric Viking explained, the company said it expects its robotic repair network to expand to 100 cities worldwide by the end of 2026.

Rather than replacing an entire battery pack, CATL said it wants to repair damaged units at the cell level. The company said that could bring some bills down from about $15,000 for a full replacement to roughly $1,480, or about one-tenth the cost.

Because the battery is typically the most expensive major part of an EV, repair options can have an outsized effect on ownership costs. In the video, The Electric Viking called battery repairs one of the biggest issues in the EV industry and said easier battery fixes could change the economics of owning an electric car.

CATL said the newest centers are also intended to service new-energy vehicles beyond its own battery lineup.

More background

The announcement comes at a key moment for EV buyers, many of whom remain concerned about repair bills, insurance costs, and the possibility that a lightly damaged vehicle could be written off.

The video cited Reuters reporting that insurers in the United States and Europe had been totaling low-mileage EVs after relatively minor crashes when battery condition could not be properly assessed or repaired. Since the pack can represent a large share of a vehicle's value, uncertainty about its condition alone can lead to scrapping the car.

The creator also cited Allianz data from Germany indicating that battery-related damage made up about 8% of claim costs there.

Some battery packs are easier to open and service than others, which means a scalable repair network could push more repair-friendly engineering across the industry.

What's being done?

CATL is aiming to create the sort of after-sales battery repair network that many drivers and insurers have long wanted. The company said it already has 1,376 franchise centers in 84 countries, along with directly operated repair sites in China and international locations in Norway and Istanbul.

CATL said robots on its repair lines handle jobs such as painting and adhesive application without human contact. The company also said its mobile electric repair trucks can perform 30 diagnostic checks and complete 50 types of on-site repairs, covering 90% of non-deep-repair cases.

Cheaper, faster battery repairs could help protect resale value and reduce the odds that a small battery issue turns into a major financial burden.
