BYD says Seagull can charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, but only on its Flash Charging network

On paper, BYD's refreshed Seagull delivers an unreal combination of benefits. It has a starting price under $10,000 in China and a claimed five-minute jump from 10% to 70% charge.

That figure does come with an important limitation for many drivers. It relies on access to BYD's proprietary Flash Charging stations.

Here's what to know

As New Atlas reported, BYD is offering the new Seagull in five versions, with sticker prices running from 65,900 yuan to 99,900 yuan — about $9,810 to $15,000.

Only the upper three trims get the headline charging setup. Those models use a 39.2-kilowatt-hour battery, are rated for 261 miles of CLTC range, and are the ones BYD says can go from 10% to 70% charge in five minutes.

Buyers choosing the cheaper Vitality and Freedom models get a different package including a 30.1-kWh battery and a 199-mile CLTC rating, without Flash charging. So the five-minute number applies only to select versions and only where BYD's own charging infrastructure exists, which narrows its real-world usefulness outside of China.

BYD says the vehicle itself has also grown substantially. The company has stretched the Seagull by 16.7 inches and lengthened the wheelbase by 6 inches, increasing seating capacity from four to five.

Storage also improved, with a 3.3-cubic-foot front trunk and, according to BYD, up to 48.7 cubic feet behind folded rear seats.

More background

New Atlas said part of what makes the Seagull notable is BYD's effort to load a budget hatchback with equipment and engineering typically associated with pricier electric vehicles.

The entry trims use an 85-kilowatt motor, while the longer-range versions use 95-kW motors, which means both represent a notable jump from the outgoing model's 55-kW unit. BYD also changed the vehicle's layout, relocating the drive motor to the rear axle and replacing the rear torsion-beam arrangement with an independent multi-link suspension.

Those changes suggest the update is about more than charging speed.

Inside, BYD says the Seagull gets a 15.6-inch display running BYD's DiLink 150 system with DeepSeek AI, plus front-seat heating and ventilation, driver massage modes, 50-watt wireless phone charging, 127-color ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker sound system.

Affordable EVs can already lower fuel costs and reduce routine maintenance compared with gas cars, and BYD is trying to make the budget end of the market feel less like a compromise.

What can be done?

BYD is using price incentives to make the Seagull even more accessible. The company announced trade-in pricing from 62,900 yuan to 96,900 yuan, with eligible buyers receiving a 3,000-yuan discount off listed prices.

It is also adding charging perks. BYD said that private buyers of the three higher-spec trims will get 12 months of free charging on BYD's Flash Charging network beginning at delivery.

For Chinese buyers who can actually use the network, BYD is pairing its five-minute charging claim with launch pricing as low as about $9,400 through trade-in offers and 12 months of free charging on the three higher-spec trims.

New Atlas said the Seagull represents "a reminder that the Chinese automakers aren't content with merely winning the price war."

"They're out to change what buyers expect for their money," the outlet concluded.

Where can I learn more?

For more on BYD's five-minute charging push, drivers and the brand have put the batteries through the paces.

• In China, BYD says 10,000 Flash Charging stations will support five-minute EV top-ups.

• In Shanghai, drivers tested BYD flash charging firsthand and saw how far the U.S. lags.

• BYD stress-tested fast charging battery health by charging a sedan 350 times in nine days.
