BYD unveiled the ATTO 8 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, introducing a seven-seat electric SUV with up to 406 miles (653 kilometers) of WLTP range and a claimed charge from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

Here's what to know

An Oct. 12 Instagram post by Autogefühl (@autogefuehl) showed the reveal of BYD's new flagship SUV.

As the cover came off the red model presented as the "fastest-charging all-electric SUV," the EV drew cheers from the crowd.

"What a beautiful car," a woman remarked onstage.

The specs for the ATTO 8 are impressive. At 16.5 feet (5.04 meters) long and using a second-generation 115-kilowatt-hour Blade Battery, it still charges very fast. The reported numbers are 10% to 97% in nine minutes, with only three additional minutes in extremely cold (-27 degrees Fahrenheit) temperatures.

Autogefühl's post said the Excellence AWD hits 62 mph (100 kilometers per hour) in 4.6 seconds, while the lineup also includes a 462-horsepower Design rear-wheel-drive model and a 775-horsepower Excellence all-wheel-drive version.

The feature list also pointed to family-minded comfort, including heated, ventilated, and massaging seats in the first two rows, a 15.6-inch display, up to 518 gallons (1,960 liters) of cargo room, and a 36-gallon (136-liter) front trunk.

More background

Not everyone was impressed by the looks or reception on Instagram, with many claiming the car was "boring" or "generic."

"Even the clapping is underwhelming," a user wrote.

"That's not what beautiful means," a different commenter quipped.

Regardless of the aesthetics, the car's capabilities are undoubtedly impressive. It could also be a winner for many families. Switching from a similarly sized gasoline SUV to an EV can mean lower fuel costs and less routine maintenance, since electric vehicles do not need oil changes and generally have fewer wear-and-tear service items tied to an internal combustion engine.

BYD is offering seven seats, a 36-gallon (136-liter) frunk, and 518 gallons (1,960 liters) of cargo space in one vehicle. That combines the practicality families often expect from larger SUVs with an all-electric format.

What can be done?

For drivers interested in a seven-seat model like the ATTO 8, buying an electric vehicle can be a way to cut fuel spending while also trimming routine maintenance costs compared with a large gas SUV.

Shoppers can also think about how much performance they actually need. The Design RWD already offers 462 horsepower, while the Excellence AWD jumps to 775 horsepower, so buyers drawn to the ATTO 8's size and range may not need the highest-output version to get the everyday benefits of driving electric.

The ATTO 8's fast-charging claim may help on road trips, but home charging is still important for day-to-day ownership. Basic Level 1 charging tends to be slow, especially for a big-battery model like this 115 kWh SUV.

That's where Qmerit comes in. The company provides free, instant installation estimates for faster Level 2 home charger installations. For a vehicle the size of the ATTO 8, that can make overnight charging much more practical.

Where can I learn more?

The ATTO 8 is part of a wider wave of electric SUVs promising more range and much faster charging.

• In Europe, BYD is rolling out luxury EVs with ultra-fast charging and 643 miles of range.

• Deepal's new S09 shows how head-turning charging capabilities are spreading to family-sized electric SUVs.

• Toyota said its next battery could deliver 745-mile range and 10-minute charging for future EVs.
