Blue Origin traces New Glenn's pad explosion to a BE-4 oxygen valve

Blue Origin says it has narrowed the cause of New Glenn's Florida launchpad explosion to a single engine part, highlighting how one malfunction can destroy expensive flight and ground hardware within seconds.

What happened?

According to The Register, Blue Origin said the May explosion began during a preflight hot-fire at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Launch Complex 36, with the main oxygen valve on one BE-4 identified as the starting point.

CEO Dave Limp said recovered hardware and follow-up inspections verified that source. Blue Origin has not detailed the valve's exact failure mode or explained how that malfunction escalated into the blast that destroyed the rocket.

New Glenn's first stage uses seven BE-4 engines, and the explosion also damaged key ground equipment, expanding the consequences of the test failure into a much larger rebuilding effort.

In June, Blue Origin said a 2026 New Glenn launch remained the goal, and Limp said, as reported by The Register, that the replacement pad would follow a revised integration process. The BE-4 is not only a Blue Origin engine: United Launch Alliance uses two of them on Vulcan's first stage.

Why does it matter?

A valve failure destroyed a launch vehicle and damaged a launchpad, adding to the cost of Blue Origin's New Glenn program.

The effects can extend beyond one company. Because the BE-4 is also used by United Launch Alliance, any concern involving a shared engine family draws attention from customers and mission planners.

Commercial rockets help deploy satellites tied to communications, navigation, weather monitoring, and national security infrastructure. If a major engine issue slows schedules or raises confidence concerns, the effects can reach well beyond the launchpad.

The destroyed rocket and damaged ground systems also add pressure to Blue Origin's launch schedule and development program.

What's being done?

Blue Origin said, as reported by The Register, that it has been running broad component tests and engine hot-fire trials to better define the failure and guide its fixes.

Limp also said that Blue Origin expects to make a relatively small valve change that can be fitted to engines already built. If that works as planned, it could reduce delays and contain some of the fallout from the explosion.

The company has been restoring the damaged launch infrastructure and changing how pad integration will be handled in the future.

"The path forward is clear," Limp wrote. "We're making small modifications to the valve that can be quickly retrofitted to existing engines."
