A bizarre traffic stop in Arizona led to a public-safety investigation after police said a man used emergency lights to pull over a Tesla, called the police, and then waited for troopers to arrive.

Here's what to know

According to Carscoops, the encounter happened at 8:29 a.m. Thursday on southbound Interstate 17 near Dove Valley Road in Phoenix, where a man in a Chevrolet pickup allegedly used dashboard-mounted red-and-blue lights to pull over a silver Tesla carrying two occupants.

When state troopers got there, the Chevrolet driver was still on-site and communicating with authorities. After speaking with the people involved, troopers determined that he had no law enforcement authority and was not affiliated with any police agency, Carscoops stated.

He was arrested and booked on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

More background

Authorities did not publicly identify him and were investigating whether this was a one-time occurrence. In a Facebook post, the Arizona Department of Public Safety asked anyone who believes the same person or vehicle may have pulled them over to call 877-4AZ-TIPS or submit a tip at azactic.gov/report.

What can be done?

Drivers who believe they are being stopped by law enforcement may pull over without hesitation, share personal information, or put themselves in an unsafe situation before realizing something is wrong.

Impersonating an officer can erode trust and create uncertainty for motorists trying to make quick decisions under stress.
