Massachusetts town eyes yearlong air monitor to map ultrafine pollution

Their extremely small size has raised concern among health researchers.

Residents in Revere, Massachusetts, may have a much clearer picture of what airplane traffic means for the air they breathe.

A new air quality monitor planned near Logan International Airport is expected to track ultrafine particulate matter, providing concrete data about concerns that have lingered for years in neighborhoods under flight paths, according to the Revere Journal.

The Massport Community Advisory Committee, headed by Executive Director Aaron Toffler, is preparing to place a high-tech monitor in Revere that will measure ultrafine particulate matter, or UFPs, linked to planes approaching Logan. 

It is also designed to record pollution from cars and other traffic.

Massport, which pays for the advisory committee, covered the monitor's roughly $15,000 cost.

Officials have not chosen an exact location yet, but Toffler said Beachmont — the Revere neighborhood nearest the airport — is the most likely site.

Toffler stated that the monitor will likely stay in place for about a year so analysts can track how pollution levels change with the seasons. Air Partners, a consulting group from the Olin School of Engineering in Needham, will help select the location and study the findings.

The data is expected to be posted daily on the MCAC website, giving residents near-real-time access to local emissions readings.

Ultrafine particles differ from the larger forms of air pollution more commonly discussed in weather and air quality reports. 

Their extremely small size has raised concern among health researchers because they may travel deep into the body.

Toffler addressed that concern directly.

"I would not be able to draw a straight line of causation between ultra fine exposure and sickness, but we do know that ultra fines get into your body – they're smaller than the particles that are currently regulated by the Clean Air Act, and so they get deeper into your body and cross into your bloodstream and cause health problems in that way," he explained.

The monitoring could show whether pollution spikes at certain times of day or during certain seasons. It could also give local leaders evidence to use when advocating for changes related to traffic, public health, and neighborhood planning.

"Revere has always been significantly impacted by Logan Airport. Air quality, noise pollution, and traffic are just a few of the impacts we have long sustained with very little recourse," said Mayor Patrick Keefe.

What's being done?

Toffler indicated that one aim is to compare Revere's readings with those from nearby communities, "so we know where the impact (of the air pollution) is the greatest." 

He also suggested that the effort could help support broader advocacy with the Environmental Protection Agency on ultrafine particle regulation.

"This monitor is going to highlight the damage that's being done, but it also gives us control of the data," State Rep. Jeff Turco remarked. "This gives us the opportunity to have independent people in charge of collecting and analyzing the data."

Keefe said the monitor was only a starting point.

"The air quality monitors are just a start, and I hope the leaders at Massport are listening loud and clear and step up as community partners, certainly much more than they have in the past."
