In Singapore, an AI-generated crocodile image was convincing enough to trigger a public safety response. Now, the man accused of creating and sending the picture could face years in prison.
Here's what to know
A fabricated saltwater crocodile sighting at a popular reservoir prompted authorities to suspend recreational activities and search for an animal that officials later determined was never there.
According to TechSpot, Singapore has charged a man identified as Ye Lin after a crocodile report at the Pandan Reservoir was traced to an image he allegedly created with Gemini and sent to a colleague in August.
The image was later reported to PUB, the country's national water agency. PUB said the image was fake and turned the matter over to police, per TechSpot. But before reaching that conclusion, the agency and national parks staff suspended aquatic activities at the popular kayaking site for two days while searching for the reported crocodile.
Police say Lin now faces one charge for transmitting a false message, an offense in Singapore punishable by up to three years in prison, a fine of up to $7,800, or both, as reported by the BBC.
Authorities also allege that he deleted the image and the Gemini app from his phone, which led to a separate obstruction of justice charge carrying up to seven years in prison.
