Vancouver, Washington, is preparing to use a new $500,000 grant to help more households and small businesses swap out outdated appliances for cleaner electric models, in a move that could lower utility bills while making homes healthier and more efficient.

Here's what to know

At a council meeting, Vancouver approved taking the award from the Washington State Department of Commerce's Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program, as The Columbian reported.

The funding is intended to help income-qualified households and small businesses pay for the purchase and installation of high-efficiency electric appliances and equipment, per The Columbian.

According to the Washington State Department of Commerce, households whose income is 150% or below the area's median income are eligible to receive rebates, in addition to nonprofits and businesses with 50 or fewer employees.

Qualifying projects can include electric heat pumps, cooking equipment like induction burners, heat pump water heaters, clothes dryers, and any panel or wiring work required to support those upgrades.

The city is now receiving money through the program for a second time as the state begins its second funding round, as The Columbian reported.

More background

Although electrification can lower bills over time, the upfront expenses are often substantial. These kinds of price tags can put efficient upgrades out of reach for lower-income homeowners, even when older appliances are more expensive to run or nearing the end of their lifespan.

City staff told officials that moving homes and businesses to newer, more efficient appliances will also reduce greenhouse gas pollution, per The Columbian. They also said the program is meant to focus support on communities where vulnerable populations face environmental and health risks connected to exposure to pollutants or contaminants.
