After deciding that Tesla's Powerwall 3 seemed both too costly and bigger than necessary, a U.S. homeowner preparing for hurricane season asked Reddit what other backup options might make more sense.

Here's what to know

In r/SolarDIY, the homeowner described an essentials-only outage plan that included a refrigerator, freezer, Wi-Fi, lights, fans, one window AC, and occasional microwave use. "Definitely not trying to run everything at once," they wrote.

EcoFlow's new TITAN was also on their shortlist. The poster said it "starts at 5kWh but offers 10kW of output," and they liked that it could be expanded later, though full pricing had not yet been released.

For homeowners weighing similar choices, EnergySage is one place to explore home battery storage choices and compare competitive installation estimates. EnergySage has teamed up with electrification brand Qmerit to help homeowners get the best price on home battery storage solutions.

EG4 was one of the names that kept surfacing in the discussion, including from one commenter who said, "I think EG4 is excellent ... all for $39,000 installed by me." They also shared a photo of their system.

More background

That praise came with a detailed example. The DIY user said their setup included five EG4 Power Pro batteries, two 18KPV inverters, and 57 Aptos bifacial panels. The same commenter also wrote, "Two years of no problems saved $15,000 already on electric bill."

Cost and expandability came up repeatedly elsewhere in the thread. One commenter said buyers can use EG4 inverters and add more batteries later while they "still save a ton."

Other brands were mentioned as well. One commenter said Ecoworthy sells batteries that meet "the latest ul standards," while another pointed to a 16-kWh PowerMega option being offered in a four-unit, 64-kWh bundle that worked out to around "$130/kwh."

What can be done?

Because the appliance list was limited to a smaller group of essentials, the homeowner's needs looked notably different from a full whole-home backup setup, which helps explain why Powerwall 3 seemed like more system than necessary.

For people who are not ready for a permanently installed system, Pila is another company offering strong battery backup options. Pila's plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of what a whole-home backup system would cost.

The conversation also suggested that some households may begin with simpler backup equipment before moving to batteries. One commenter said a 3,500-watt propane generator once "ran the whole house except the AC" and provided "23 hours of runtime on one propane tank."

As one commenter put it, "I don't understand how the math works out for the Powerwall. The EG4 stuff is so much cheaper and I am very happy with mine so far."
