UK homeowner finds solar loan payments would outweigh the savings from a small rooftop system

"I think I'm just about fully convinced I need to just get the gear and have it installed."

While solar panels can help homeowners lower their energy bills, one U.K. homeowner found that financing a system for their narrow roof could actually increase their monthly expenses.

Here's what to know

Quotes of about £9,000 to £12,000 (~$12,075-16,100) for panels and battery storage prompted a homeowner to seek advice in a Reddit post. Limited roof space left them with eight 450-watt panels or six 515-watt panels.

The best financing available to them carried a 4.9% annual percentage rate. To estimate potential savings, the homeowner used Solcast Forecast alongside their actual electricity usage and ran the figures through ChatGPT.

"Has anyone gotten a similarly small Solar system and been disappointed by it? In each instance, our monthly outgoings will actually increase," they asked.

Going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy, and solar leases in particular can deliver hundreds of dollars in monthly savings without upfront costs, depending on the home and terms. Homeowners considering that route can use EasyHome's free explorer tool to see potential savings from vetted installers in their area.

More background

One commenter in England's Midlands described their own smaller system. That system generated 3.98 megawatt-hours of electricity in a year. Installed in July 2024 across the house and a detached garage, its eight 435-watt panels were paired with 10 kilowatt-hours of battery storage.

"I have 10kWh of battery storage, and there were several periods in the summer that I didn't use any grid electricity at all, for me it's been worth it," the commenter wrote.

The commenter had paid cash and estimated that their system would take roughly 10 years to pay for itself, without the added cost of financing.

A trench between the buildings and longer cable runs contributed to the installation bill. Scaffolding was another expense. The narrow, three-story house required a costly setup, and the garage needed its own scaffolding.

Even with panels on the roof's other side, the original poster noted they would have a relatively small system. Quotes put the additional cost of that expansion at about £4,000 ($5,365).

What can be done?

Cheaper overnight electricity offered another possibility.

"Have you looked at a battery only install?" they asked. "With the right size it would mean you can shift all your usage to a cheap overnight tariff, could be a much shorter payback."

Without an electric vehicle, the homeowner replied that their access to attractive charging tariffs was limited. Still, they considered a battery-only installation likely and pointed to one overnight offer of 15 pence per unit. That's where it seemed they ended up landing after the consensus was that it was the most sensible move.

"I think I'm just about fully convinced I need to just get the gear and have it installed," they wrote.

For homeowners comparing solar-and-storage packages, EasyHome can also help them explore backup battery storage options alongside installer choices. Pairing solar with a battery allows homeowners to maximize savings and power their home with solar when the grid goes down, provided the installation is configured for backup power.
