For anyone planning a new-build home, choosing between a gas and an induction stove can quickly become a bigger decision. The considerations include safety, easier cleaning, and ongoing costs.
To sort through their options, one U.K. homebuyer polled the r/HousingUK subreddit for feedback.
Here's what to know
The discussion unfolded in a Reddit thread, where the poster asked for "an honest opinion" on gas versus induction for a new build. Most of the replies, especially from people who had used both, leaned toward induction.
Ease of use and cleaning came up often.
"We redid our kitchen earlier this year and also changed from gas to induction," one commenter wrote. "I love how much easier it is to keep clean."
A second commenter, after moving from induction back to gas, was emphatic: "HATE the gas hob, it takes so much longer to boil water and it's a pain in the bum to clean."
Risk reduction also featured in the discussion. One commenter wrote, "And less dangerous."
"For your health (and especially if you have kids) go for induction," a user advised.
More background
Cost was part of the argument too.
"There doesn't seem like much point in paying a standing charge just to use a gas hob, so I would install induction if I was choosing today," one commenter said.
Another made a similar point: "If/when you lose the gas boiler you'll be gutted spending 60p per day for the honour of having a gas hob..."
What's being done
One commenter who had changed layouts during a kitchen redo also highlighted peace of mind, saying induction meant "no risk of blowing the house up by leaving the gas on, or someone leaving the hob on and walking away."
That seemed to be the deciding factor for the buyer over other considerations like ease of cleaning, speed, and cost.
"Thanks again for all your opinion… we have decided to stay with induction hob as we got kids," they wrote in an update to their original post.
