'Find a different company': Texas homeowner's $5,600 repair quote draws pushback

"I feel like it's a 'we don't want to do it price.'"

A North Texas homeowner thought a 10-year warranty would soften the blow of a leaking HVAC coil.

Instead, they said the part was covered, but the labor, refrigerant, and related work still came with a roughly $5,600 quote for the six-year-old system.

Here's what to know

The homeowner took their story to Reddit's r/HVACAdvice forum, where they asked, "Would it make more sense to just replace the outdoor unit, or even the whole system at this point?"

Their issue involves an approximately 3-ton heat pump cooling the 1,350-square-foot home. The original poster added that a technician found a hole near the bottom of the outdoor Spine Fin coil where "a copper line is rubbing against it."

The homeowner said the coil remains covered by the manufacturer's 10-year parts warranty, but the company that installed the system is still asking roughly $5,600 to do the job. They added that replacing the entire system would run around $14,000. After hearing this, the OP explained, "I don't love the idea of dumping $5,000+ into a 6-year-old system when the compressor or fan motor could be next, but full system replacement also feels premature."

In a follow-up, OP wrote, "I feel like it's a 'we don't want to do it price,'" and added that another local company "said they'd be in the 3s as well."

One commenter wrote, "find a different company to come give you a quote for the warranty work. Any tech willing to go through the warranty paperwork can do the install, not just your original installer." Several others said the $5,600 estimate sounded high compared with what they've seen elsewhere.

One commenter from North Florida wrote, "we would be around $3,000 or so," and said a similar non-warranty replacement there would use less than 10 pounds of R-410A and take "about 3 hrs of labor."

What can be done?

Surprise HVAC bills also point to a reality for many homeowners: upgrading heating and cooling can cut utility and repair bills and guard against rising energy costs.

Palmetto can help homeowners understand their HVAC options and lower energy bills with newer, more efficient HVAC systems and heat pumps, while Palmetto's Comfort Plan network helps readers find efficient heating and cooling solutions for their home and connect with vetted installers.

For homeowners who decide a repair no longer makes financial sense, newer equipment can lower monthly costs. If paying up front is the hurdle, the Comfort Plan offers $0-down options that can cut heating and cooling costs by up to 50% and include 12 years of free maintenance.

Homeowners who replace older equipment can also pair solar panels with electric appliances, including efficient HVACs, to push utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easier to compare solar options and installers for a home and budget, and it can help homeowners save up to $10,000 on solar installations.
