Texas homeowner books $80 HVAC tune-up, gets $30,000 ductwork quote

A Texas homeowner who booked a low-cost HVAC maintenance visit said the appointment turned into a string of repair quotes: $260 for a chemical coil cleaning, $470 for an ignition module, and later, after updating the post, $30,000 for ductwork in a 2,200-square-foot house.

Here's what to know

In a Reddit post shared in the r/HVACAdvice forum, the original poster said a "local" company came out for seasonal maintenance and started by pointing to aging ductwork. The technician also said the outdoor coils needed a chemical treatment instead of a standard rinse and later sent over a quote for the ignition module. The poster declined the repairs.

The recommendations stood out because the OP said there had "not [been] any issues so far" with the system since another company replaced the evaporator coil.

For many commenters, the bargain price was the first clue. One commenter said, "Let me guess, the tune up was less than $80," and the OP replied, "Yeah, about that price actually."

Another commenter wrote, "You aren't getting a real maintenance for less than $100."

Upgrading heating and cooling equipment is one of the most straightforward ways to lower monthly utility costs and guard against rising energy prices. Services such as Palmetto's Comfort Plan network can help homeowners compare efficient HVAC systems and heat pumps and connect with vetted installers.

Other commenters said coil cleaning should not have been treated as a separate upsell. One commenter said their company's $225 yearly checkup included it as "just a standard part of a 'tune up.'"

More background

The low-priced maintenance call also drew labels such as a "loss leader," while another commenter said companies charging less than $150-$200 per hour for maintenance are "definitely looking to upsell."

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

One commenter argued that the wording can set the wrong expectation: "Personally, I hate the term 'tune-up.'" They added that, aside from cleaning condenser coils and checking wire connections, "it's more of a unit inspection to gather information on the overall health of your unit."

That same commenter said documentation is a key test of whether a recommendation is credible. "If the company is showing you photos of what each component is rated for and what their actual readings of said component are, they are trying to do right by you," they wrote.

Clear documentation can help people determine whether they are paying for preventive maintenance that extends a system's life or being pushed toward unnecessary work that adds cost without lowering bills.

What can be done?

Before booking a visit, homeowners can ask for a detailed explanation of what a tune-up covers. In the comments, higher-priced annual maintenance plans were described as including tasks such as washing the condenser coils, checking readings, and flagging parts that could be a problem later, rather than immediately pushing a replacement.

Homeowners can also ask for proof before agreeing to added work. If a technician recommends an ignition module, refrigerant-related work, or major duct replacement, homeowners can request photos, meter readings, and the component's rated range — then get a second opinion if the explanation seems thin.

For people who do end up needing an upgrade, Palmetto's Comfort Plan includes 12 years of free maintenance, and, if you're not ready to spend up front, $0-down options that can lower your heating and cooling costs by up to 50%.

Homeowners can also pair solar panels with electric appliances such as efficient HVAC systems to push utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget, saving you up to $10,000 on installations.

Summing up their frustration, the OP wrote, "I'd rather pay more money up front to have the equipment maintenance than to be nickel and dimed about each additional service to maintain the system."

Other homeowners have described routine HVAC calls that quickly escalated into five-figure estimates.

• A homeowner said a basic AC visit turned into a suspicious $20,000 quote and left them feeling gaslit.

• In Houston, a homeowner was stunned by a $16,000 quote for what seemed like a basic AC repair.
