Tesla solar owner says crew damaged roof and gutters, tried to charge a fee until they showed video proof

What started as a return appointment to address a solar system issue ended in a dispute over roof and gutter damage, according to a Tesla customer who says the company only dropped a site visit fee after seeing video of its own technician discussing the problem.

Here's what to know

In a post on Reddit's r/TeslaSolar, the homeowner said Tesla ultimately apologized, waived the site visit charge, and offered reimbursement for gutter repair — prompting the remark, "If I did not have the recording I would have been screwed."

The homeowner said the dispute followed a denied permission to operate and a failed city inspection after the solar panels and Powerwall home battery were installed.

During a later Tesla visit meant to adjust the setup, the crew allegedly damaged the roof and gutter. The homeowner said workers then spent about two hours patching the roof and clearing clogged gutters, only for Tesla to later email that it found no damage and would charge a site visit fee.

After the owner shared a video showing a technician acknowledging the damage on-site, Tesla changed its response.

Elsewhere in the thread, the homeowner explained what triggered the rejection: "The conduit wasn't up to code and the system was too large to qualify for the energy program. Both were quick fixes."

More background

The OP said part of the reason they picked Tesla was confidence in the company's staying power and convenience, saying that Tesla's warehouse was "less than 10 miles" from their home. They also made clear that the equipment performed well, with the main frustration centered on customer service.

Replies varied based on regional differences.

A commenter from California said Tesla had been "super conservative" on code margins during that install and added that the battery portion of the bid was "$10,000 cheaper than everyone else." Customer experiences can vary significantly by region, even when buyers choose the same brand for similar reasons.

Some commenters suggested installation and service arrangements might help to explain the gap in experiences. When there is a failed inspection or the need for a rework visit, it can cause delays, add stress, and spark disputes over who pays when something goes wrong on the roof.

What can be done?

The OP said, "I saved all text and emails," and one commenter advised, "Record all interactions going forward."

Another commenter warned, "Make sure to settle this before you pay," while the OP said, "My contract requires arbitration if I ever want to sue." In disputes involving inspection fixes, repair damage, and reimbursement, those contract terms can shape what options a homeowner actually has.
