A California homeowner said a Tesla solar setup that once covered the household's needs began producing only a fraction of its normal output — and that getting the system repaired turned into a months-long ordeal.
Here's what to know
The issue came to light in April 2026, when the homeowner received a large bill from SCE. In their Reddit post, the customer said the Tesla system had been installed in April 2021 and had worked well for years, but a check of the app showed it "produces only 1/4 as it used to be."
According to the homeowner's post and later comments, the service timeline started with a request for help in April, included a June appointment, and was then pushed to August. When two technicians eventually arrived in August, the homeowner said they tried to repair the system, but "the problem was still" there.
After that visit, the OP said the technicians advised requesting an inverter replacement, but the process never moved forward. "This is where the nightmare begins," the homeowner said. They added that four calls over three weeks all ended with the same direction to wait for a field manager, while promised callbacks "were NEVER CALL BACK."
That kind of delay can carry real financial consequences. If a solar system is underperforming and the homeowner does not notice right away, expected utility savings can vanish while the customer is still waiting on warranty or service support.
More background
One Reddit user said involving a state contractors licensing board led to faster action from the company: "File the complaint. I did this in California and Tesla became more responsive immediately and I was able to get a resolution."
Not all of the replies were negative, however. Another Redditor said a Powerwall problem was fixed quickly and that they had "been very happy with the system / service for 5 years and continuing."
A third person said they had "zero issues" apart from an app-reading glitch.
What can be done?
For homeowners dealing with a possible solar system failure, the first step is often documentation: app screenshots, production data, utility bills, service dates, and records of every support interaction. That paper trail can become important if a case drags on.
Some users discussed submitting service requests directly through the Tesla app. Others shared personal experiences restarting their systems after inverter errors, though those were anecdotal fixes rather than official guidance and may not apply in every situation.
A system can appear normal from the outside while producing far less than expected, and the first sign of trouble may show up on the electric bill.
Where can I learn more?
A months-long wait for a solar repair is part of a broader run of complaints from Tesla customers about what happens when the company's products need support. Coverage has also looked at how those frustrations overlap with consumer-protection concerns and growing pressure on the brand.
• Tesla is attempting to salvage its reputation by using AI to handle customer complaints.
• In South Korea, officials said vehicles that disadvantage consumers should not keep key subsidies.
• Across Europe, Tesla sales are slowing as the impact of Musk's beliefs grows clearer.
When support drags out, the costs can extend well beyond a single repair visit. That's part of why an unresolved inverter problem can feel so urgent — and so expensive.
