A homeowner in Victoria, Australia, says a key Tesla Powerwall 3 setting was left in the wrong mode, preventing the battery from exporting stored energy during high-value evening hours.

But the homeowner said the installer's Tesla Gateway setup allowed exports only from solar, not from the battery.

"My goal is simple: charge the battery for free at midday, run the house overnight, and export some battery power during that 6–9 PM peak window to get the feed-in credit," the homeowner explained.

A key disagreement was whether battery exports depended on joining a virtual power plant, or VPP.

The installer said that setting had to stay off unless the home was enrolled, but one commenter disputed that, writing: "I think things are getting mixed up here. ... VPP is a separate issue. VPP is more market based control. DNSP's is more around technical issues/localised limitations & backstop."

"The issue is purely the installer conflating the DNSP/export rules with retailer VPPs. He thinks selecting 'Solar and Battery' in the Tesla commissioning app requires a VPP agreement, whereas leaving it on 'Solar Only' just forces the Gateway to physically block the Powerwall from discharging to the grid even though the site itself is fully approved to export," they wrote.
