With electricity prices soaring along with the summer heat, many homeowners are exploring ways to use home solar to slash their energy bills.

One such homeowner in Ohio turned to the internet for help evaluating a solar leasing offer with several attention-grabbing terms: a roughly $32,000 cost with no prepayment penalty, the right to keep SREC credits, and the option of taking ownership of the equipment after five years.

Because the arrangement seemed unusually favorable, the homeowner went to Reddit to ask for people's takes.

What happened?

In a post on the r/solar subreddit, the homeowner said the financing model stood out because they had not previously seen this kind of prepaid lease in Ohio.

"In Ohio, there haven't been any prepaid lease (until now) to take advantage of the commercial tax credit," the original poster wrote.

The equipment listed in the proposal was 37 REC Alpha Pure 440 panels with Enphase IQ8X microinverters.

Under the arrangement, the OP explained: "I keep the SREC credits, and I can sell them for around $2,000."

Those credits, known as solar renewable energy certificates, can sometimes add meaningful value to a rooftop solar deal, depending on the market.

Why does it matter?

Financial arrangements like a prepaid solar lease can be appealing because solar can lower monthly utility bills and offer some protection against future electricity rate increases. Still, prepaid leases and power purchase agreements can be more complicated than a standard cash purchase, especially when ownership does not begin right away.

Key terms to look out for include who is responsible for maintenance, roof issues, insurance, system monitoring, and production guarantees. It is also important to understand what happens if the home is sold before the panels officially transfer ownership, as such an arrangement could complicate a future property sale.

Regardless of the financial arrangement that fits your budget, going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy over time. Homeowners interested in learning more can use EnergySage to get quick solar installation estimates and compare quotes.

What can I do?

Comparing the terms and costs of a prepaid lease against a solar loan and an outright purchase can help show whether a five-year path to ownership offers the best mix of savings and flexibility.

Having access to free comparison tools and other easy-to-understand information can make that process much easier. For example, EnergySage's solar map shows the average cost of a home solar panel system state-by-state, as well as details on solar panel incentives for each state. Together, these resources can help readers get the best price for rooftop solar panels and access available incentives.

Adding battery storage to a solar setup can make your home more resilient during outages and even allow homeowners to go off-grid while also saving money on energy. Batteries do this by storing extra solar power for use after sunset or when the grid goes down. Homeowners can explore EnergySage for free information about home battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates.
