In South Carolina, children's goodbye letters for a senior dog went viral and got him adopted

Interest in adopting him came from as far away as England and Australia.

After entering a South Carolina shelter under painful circumstances, Cotton, a senior dog, eventually found a new home, with his story drawing attention far beyond the state.

What set his case apart were farewell letters from the children in the family who cared for him for six years, turning a difficult surrender into a story that connected with people around the world, according to WHNS.

Here's what to know

Cotton was brought to the Greenville Humane Society in Greenville, South Carolina, after a cancer diagnosis in the household led the family to give him up.

He had been with them since he was a puppy.

Cotton arrived with goodbye notes from the children, and the story quickly spread beyond the local area. Interest in adopting him came from as far away as England and Australia.

Javy Pagan, marketing manager for the Greenville Humane Society, believed the response reflected the support system the shelter has built.

"We have a wonderful community who supports us. We have people who come from other states who follow our social media to pick up pets that need help," Pagan remarked.

In the end, the attention around Cotton led to the result the family wanted: he was adopted into a new home.

More background

Cotton was an older dog, and the letters he came with underscored the family's situation.

The surrender happened because of a cancer diagnosis in the home, adding to the difficulty of the separation.

Pagan said the shelter rarely sees that kind of written farewell.

"Cotton coming with such a visible story, coming with his goodbye letters is something we don't see very often," Pagan began.

"But when we do, we really want to honor the wishes of the family. Really, really respect those children and make sure that their wish for Cotton is granted and that he goes home to the perfect household."

Cotton's case drew attention from people around the world, and Pagan noted that the Greenville Humane Society also reaches adopters outside South Carolina through social media.

WHNS reported that Cotton's new neighbors were preparing to celebrate his homecoming.
