A shy shelter dog who spent months being overlooked has finally gotten the fresh start rescuers had hoped for.

Mimi, who was surrendered in Romania, has now been adopted by a family in Germany after a long wait for the right match.

Here's what to know

Mimi's situation was highlighted in a YouTube video posted by Howl of a Dog (@HowlOfADog).

According to Howl of a Dog, Mimi and fellow dog Nira arrived at the shelter together after their owner said they were no longer able to keep them.

Nira did not wait long for a home, but Mimi remained at the shelter for months as adopters passed her by.

Mimi's extreme shyness was the main reason behind her extended wait, making it much harder for people to form a connection with her.

"She needed someone who would be willing to look beyond her fear and give her the time and patience she needed to feel safe," Howl of a Dog explained.

That opportunity eventually came from a family in Germany, who adopted Mimi and have been showing patience as she adjusts to her new surroundings and new life.

More background

In the stressful environment of a kennel, shy dogs may withdraw, freeze, or avoid interaction altogether, making them seem less adoptable than more outgoing pets. But that behavior does not always reflect who they are once they leave the shelter.

For many fearful dogs, the biggest change comes when they are given a predictable routine, a quiet place to decompress, and people who do not rush them.

Despite her long, uncertain ordeal, Howl of a Dog said that ultimately Mimi ended up with what it described as "the perfect family."

What can be done?

Some of the pets who seem the most uncertain at first may simply need a calmer setting and more time than others.

Anyone bringing home a shy dog can help by keeping the environment quiet, limiting too many introductions at once, and letting the animal approach humans on its own timeline.

Consistency matters, and small signs of trustworthiness can often mean more than dramatic breakthroughs.

As Howl of a Dog put it, Mimi "is now with a family who understands her, respects her pace, and is giving her the patience and security she needs to build her confidence."

Where can I learn more?

Mimi's adoption echoes other rescue stories of dogs who were easy to overlook until someone finally gave them time and stability.

• In Scotland, after 1,055 days in care, a family made an unloved pup theirs.

• In Thailand, rescuers watched a street dog transform before she finally reached home.

• At Greenville Humane Society, an overlooked shelter mama got toys, tacos, and another chance.

• Back at the same shelter, rescuers refused to let a senior dog fade away.

• In Utah, a desperate plea led to a miracle reunion for a senior dog.
